Internet HelpDesk

Internet helpdesk.. the most frustrating, thankless, and low paying job of my life thus far. Daily barrages of calls, being spit from an endless queue of clueless callers. A large percentage of callers who happened to sit through the amazingly pathetic hold times, didn’t even have internet problems at all.. Finally making their way to a helpdesk tech, they stated issues, such as “Microsoft Office wont open, what’s wrong with my internet?” or perhaps they may have even been inclined to believe they needed to pay their bill when their screen reads “BOOT FAILURE!”..
One of my favorite particular incidents started with a charming call from a woman, whose husband had dished out quite a bit of money for a nice new fancy laptop. She had called to receive help setting up their dialup account on the new computer. Everything went smooth, they were setup, and all was well. A bit later in the day I receive a call from the same phone number and it happened to be the husband this time. Upon answering the guy sounded a bit frustrated, but was calm and collective about his situation.. “My internet doesn’t work!” he stated.. I found this odd, as it was a brand new computer, which was working fine less than a few hours earlier. After a bit of investigation, the problem appeared to be, he had unplugged the phone line from the computer, therefore, no way his computer could dial out. After informing the gentlemen of the cause, he proceeded to give me and earful of rage. Come to found out, the only reason he went out and bought a fancy new notebook, when they had a pretty up to date desktop, was because he wanted to use his internet on the road, and anywhere he pleased without being chained to a phone jack. I gave it my best to explain how a dialup account works, falling upon deaf ears. This was totally unacceptable, if I didn’t somehow find a way to reengineer the whole concept of dialup in the course of an afternoon he’d have my job! At some point we got disconnected. “Thank god” I thought to my self, feeling a hint relief, thinking I was done dealing with this poor sap. I then happen to overhear a fellow tech talking on the phone, with a very familiar overtone. He had called back to get someone else, who might be a bit nicer to me and turn on the “Dialup anywhere” function on his account, har har har. After getting the same answer from a completely different rep, he still wasn’t satisfied. I did receive another call before quitting time from the guy, I calmly tried to explain they had cellular services out there which could handle his request, but not from the company I worked for. After exercising futility the remainder of the shift trying to press this concept through the phone and into this guys non-conforming brain, he cancelled his service.. Apparently, Netzero can give him the same service for half the price, and will more than likely allow him to use his dialup anywhere he wishes. If you happen to find this service, please link me, as my ATT air card runs about $80 a month.
